As part of the project to relocate the cathedral font, we invited Ian Jenkins to the cathedral to digitally capture the font before works began. The process of photogrammetry is fascinating and we are very grateful to Ian for allowing us to share some of his work!

Preserving History Through Photogrammetry: Digitally Capturing Hereford Cathedral’s Font by Ian Jenkins

I recently had the privilege of conducting a photogrammetry survey of the Font before its relocation. This project was an important opportunity to document the Font in high detail, ensuring its historical significance is preserved for future reference and restoration.

Why Photogrammetry?

Photogrammetry is a powerful technique that allows us to create precise 3D models from photographs. By capturing multiple images from different angles, specialized software reconstructs an accurate digital representation of an object or environment. This technique is widely used in heritage preservation, architecture, and surveying.

For this survey, photogrammetry was the ideal method because:

  • It provides a high-resolution 3D model, preserving intricate details of the Font.
  • The process is non-invasive, ensuring the artifact remains untouched.
  • The final model will serve as a valuable reference for historical documentation and restoration efforts
  • The resulting model can be used for public engagement, allowing people to explore the artifact virtually.
