Hereford Cathedral will welcome renowned musician Roger Sayer to perform Interstellar: From Space to Earth on the Willis organ this June.

A former organ student at St Paul's Cathedral, Roger Sayer was Prize Winner at the 1989 St Albans International Organ Competition and won all of the organ prizes at the Royal College of Music. Now at the forefront of British choral and organ music, his most notable performance work is as organ soloist for Hans Zimmer's Oscar nominated score for the motion picture Interstellar.

This evening gala concert will take place on Tuesday 9 June at 7 pm and will feature an exciting programme of sci-fi and cinema inspired pieces alongside Hans Zimmer’s Interstellar Suite. The concert will open with the Thunderbirds Theme before moving into John Williams’ Princess Leia Theme and the Imperial March from Star Wars. Elgar’s Imperial March also features within the programme as does Holst’s Venus from the Planets Suite and Bossi’s Scherzo. The concert will conclude with the moving and spectacular Prelude and Fugue sur le nom d’ Alain by Maurice Duruflé.

Peter Dyke, Assistant Director of Music, Hereford Cathedral said: “I’m tremendously excited about Roger’s concert, which gives a chance to hear well-known film music and some of the best original organ music on our fabulous and historic Willis organ. There’s something special about hearing music heard on film played live in the awe-inspiring and resonant space of the cathedral. You could say this programme boldly goes where few have gone before!”

Roger Sayer said: “Hereford Cathedral’s Willis organ is so well-suited to all kinds of music, whether traditional or modern, and I’m looking forward to playing this wonderfully varied range of pieces on this great instrument.”

Interstellar: From Space to Earth takes place on Tuesday 9 June at 7 pm. Tickets for this evening concert cost £12 (students £5) and are available to purchase from the cathedral website or ticket desk in person or by telephone (01432 374 202).

This concert forms part of this year’s summer organ recital programme which welcomes organists from across the country and internationally to perform on the cathedral’s Willis organ. Click here to view the full programme.
