Escape Room

The Shrine Keeper: An interactive clue-cracking and decoding game located in the Old Chapel in the Cloisters.

After 3 years of running the Escape Room game, we are excited to announce that our brand new story The Shrine Keeper is now available to book!

The Shrine Keeper is set in medieval Hereford and centres around a group of pilgrims visiting and leaving offerings at the shrine of St Thomas Cantilupe. As the pilgrims attend the morning service in the cathedral, the Shrine Keeper realises that a precious ring, which had been left at the shrine earlier in the day, has gone missing. The group taking on the challenge of the Escape Room have been sent by The City of Hereford’s Sargeant at Law to the Old Chapel, where the pilgrims will be spending the night, to search for the hidden ring and help solve the mystery before times run out.

The Escape Room will be running fortnightly on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, plus one Saturday a month.

Sessions are currently available to book!

For more information, please contact [email protected] or call 01432 374 263.

Interested in getting involved? We are keen to recruit more volunteers to supervise sessions as a Shrine Keeper! For more information, please contact Verity via 01432 374 263 or email [email protected]

Frequently Asked Questions:

Price?

The cost of each bookable Escape Room session is £70. This is the total hire fee for the one-hour session, however many guests you bring.

Capacity?

We recommend that the Escape Room is suitable for between 2 and 6 people.

As above, the price of the session remains the same however many guests you bring.

Age?

We recommend that the Escape Room is suitable for age 11 and above. All under 16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. This adult can either be part of the team, or can be provided with a seat to sit and watch.

Where do I go?

The Escape Room is hosted in the Old Chapel in the cathedral cloisters. You will be met at the cloister entrance by a member of staff 5 minutes before your booking. Arrival instructions (including the 'What3Words') and more information will be emailed to you a few days before your booking.

Accessibility?

The Escape Room is hosted in the Old Chapel in the cathedral cloisters. The room and entrance are all on one level, so it is fully wheelchair accessible. Some clues and puzzles may on floor level, or above sitting level. There will be a supervisor in the room at all times for any physical assistance.

A number of chairs are readily available in the set-up of the game. Please get in touch if you would like a specific number of chairs to be available for permanent use throughout the session.

A social story can be provided on request. All Escape Room guests will be met at the cloister entrance, given an introduction, and supervised at all times,

Please do get in touch if you would like to discuss any of the above: email [email protected] or call Verity on 01432 374 263

Claustrophobia?

The Escape Room is hosted in the Old Chapel in the cathedral cloisters. The room is spacious, with three external windows. The game does not include any small or confining spaces, and the door is not genuinely locked. A ‘safe word’ is provided, which can be used at any time if visitors need to leave the room or receive support. A supervisor is present in the room throughout the session.

Phones?

There is space in the room for bags, coats, and phones to be left. Visitors are welcome to have their phones on them, but they are not permitted to be used for photography or searches during the game. There is a photo opportunity at the end, taken in a space where clues wont accidentally be revealed!

The Medieval Theme….

The Shrine Keeper game is set in Medieval Hereford and is adapted from real characters and stories. Not every element of the game will be historically accurate and no historical knowledge is required.

The development of The Shrine Keeper has been kindly supported by the Cathedral Sustainability Fund.
