On Monday 23 March 2026 at 7 pm, The Revd Dr Sam Wells will deliver a thought-provoking lecture exploring the past, present and future of Christianity in contemporary society.

As part of Hereford Cathedral’s Life & Learning programme, he will explore what Christianity really means in today’s world and how its place in public life has changed. The lecture will begin by reflecting on the “Old, Old Story” - both the real and imagined sense of the influence Christianity once held in the public imagination. It will then consider the many challenges that narrative now faces from cultural, social and intellectual perspectives.

In the final and most substantial part of the evening, Dr Sam Wells will explore how a reshaped and renewed Christianity could respond meaningfully to the greatest challenges of our time. The lecture will conclude with practical suggestions for how this renewal might take shape in communities today.

Sam Wells is a writer, broadcaster, preacher, pastor, theologian and institutional leader. He is Vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, where he oversees a distinctive combination of commercial, cultural and charitable initiatives set within a vibrant congregational life.

A prolific author, he has written more than 50 books, including Constructing an Incarnational Theology (Cambridge University Press, 2025). He is also a frequent contributor to BBC Radio 4’s Thought for the Day.

The Revd Canon James Pacey, Chancellor of Hereford Cathedral, said: “Sam is one of our country’s most well-known and respected theological voices. I am absolutely delighted that he has agreed to be part of our Year of Storytelling and I know will offer some deep wisdom as we reflect on what the Gospel means in our contemporary world.”
