This morning we gathered for Staff Communion at Hereford Cathedral and would like to share a prayer written by our Volunteer & Projects Coordinator, Joanne Gibson.

Staff Communion prayers for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity: "One Body, One Spirit" (Ephesians 4:4) and the visual journey of the Luxmuralis "Time" show currently transforming the interior of Hereford Cathedral.

 

Lord of Eternity, As the projections of Luxmuralis traverse wormholes and the vastness of the cosmos within the ancient walls of our cathedral each evening, we are reminded of our own journey through time. As the light moves through the Nave and beyond, connecting the past to the present, we reflect on the theme of "One Body and One Spirit", that you were there at the beginning and are still now. We pray that you would give us the grace to work as one, unified by a single spirit of service, a shared hope for our community, and our love for you.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

 

God of the Minutes and the Hours, As the light show reveals the intricate workings of clocks upon the Cathedral’s arches, we pray for the "mechanics" of our own team. Help us to value every "cog" in our organisation, recognizing that in our diversity, we remain one body. May our daily schedules and deadlines be illuminated by a spirit of patience and peace, ensuring that our collective work remains in perfect harmony with your purpose, and that we remain in harmony with one another, and those whom we serve.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

 

Eternal God, the "Time" installation tells a dramatic narrative. As we pray for the visible unity of your Church, help us to be a "living mural" of that unity in our workplace. May the light of your Spirit, which outshines even the brightest projection, guide our decisions and our interactions. Let us walk in a manner worthy of our calling, holding onto the one hope that anchors us through the changing seasons of time.

God of all Time, the vast cycles of history echoing around us in this place are often beyond our understanding and certainly beyond our control. For those who feel overwhelmed today—stretched by the pressure of the show or spinning in a sense of chaos and feeling out of control, for whatever reason —we ask for your grounding presence. When our own "clockwork" feels broken or out of sync, remind us that we do not carry this load alone. Help us to lean on the One Spirit that connects us, letting go of the need for perfection, and trusting in you to see us through.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

 

Creator of Light, we pray for the heart of our cathedral team. Mend any fractures in our shared life or where any feel isolated, or disappointed by another. May those facing health challenges feel the warmth of our care and the strength of your healing touch. And as we host so many visitors each day and evening, help us to be gentle with ourselves and one another. May the beauty we are sharing with the world be reflected in the kindness and patience we show to each member of our "one body" today, and may we be what you need us to be in the months and weeks to come, whether to provide food or warmth or haven.

Lord, in this week of prayer for Christian unity and light show, let your One Spirit be our strength, your One Body be our support, and your eternal light be our peace, to the Glory of your name, Amen.
