Hereford Cathedral is set to host a range of events exploring Space & Other Worlds to celebrate the arrival of Luxmuralis’ Space in October. As part of this programme, the cathedral is pleased to announce three fascinating lectures.

The Cathedral will host two events led by Revd Professor David Wilkinson, Director of Equipping Christian Leadership in an Age of Science (ECLAS - www.eclasproject.org). The first lecture Space, other worlds, and God: the search for aliens, will take place on the evening of Friday 27 September, 7 pm in College Hall. Revd Professor Wilkinson will explore the exciting new scientific discoveries of planets outside the solar system and what this might mean for the question of whether we are alone in the universe. Rather than this being a problem for Christian faith, he will suggest that Christians have long welcomed such speculation and indeed our search for aliens may be a reflection of a search for a deeper story to the universe.

On Saturday 28 September from 10 am – 1 pm, Revd Professor Wilkinson will lead his second event in an interactive seminar entitled Wonder, wisdom and worship: the Christian understanding of creation. In this seminar he will ask what it means if the church sees science as a gift rather than a threat? Reflecting on the biblical doctrine of creation and his own experience as an astrophysicist, Revd Professor Wilkinson will explore how a church which sees science as a gift from God can be energised in mission and ministry in the contemporary world.

The final lecture in the series Space & Other Worlds season is the cathedral’s annual Cantilupe Lecture – Luxmuralis Space which will take place on Wednesday 2 October at 3 pm. Renowned artist and sculptor Peter Walker will be giving an insight into the artistic collaboration Luxmuralis and his creative practice. Walker’s work which adorns towns and cities both nationally and internationally, consists of large-scale sculpture, commissioned and bespoke sculptural works as well as paintings, drawings, film, sound and light installations. Peter is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and a member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors.
