HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, RIP

The Revd Canon Andrew Piper, Precentor & Acting Dean of Hereford Cathedral writes:

"It was with great sadness that our community learned today of Prince Philip’s death. Many people here remember the four visits that His Royal Highness made to Hereford Cathedral: in each case he was accompanying Her Majesty The Queen. Their first visit was in April 1957, when they completed their tour of the county with a closing ceremony in the cathedral. They returned in April 1976 for the Service of the Royal Maundy, and again in May 1996 to open the new Library Building. In July 2012, during The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee tour of the country, it was my privilege to escort His Royal Highness during the opening ceremony of the recently renovated Cathedral Close.

While we continue to offer prayers for the repose of Prince Philip’s soul in the days ahead, we are also praying that the Holy Spirit will comfort and uphold Her Majesty The Queen and all the members of the Royal Family in their bereavement."

Prayers on the death of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh

O God, whose love is boundless and whose mercies cannot be numbered; accept our prayers for the soul of your servant Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and grant him an entrance into your heavenly kingdom of peace, light and joy, in the fellowship of all your saints; through the grace of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who died and rose again and opened the gate of glory, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be praise and honour now and for ever. Amen.

Most merciful God, whose wisdom is beyond our understanding, surround Elizabeth our Queen and all the Royal Family with the light of your love, that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in your goodness, and strength to meet the days to come. We ask this through him who died that we might live, your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
