Donated Bird Boxes Help Support Hereford Cathedral's Eco Aims

Hereford Cathedral has received twelve new RSPB bird boxes to help create safe nesting spaces within its grounds.

The generous donation of the bird boxes has been facilitated by ‘Welcome to our Future’ (WtoF) with the hopes that it will help to reverse the trend of declining bird numbers within the UK. The project has been funded by Severn Waste Services via the Landfill Communities Fund and bird boxes have been provided to a selection of churches in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

The boxes, which aim to attract several different bird species, have been installed throughout the gardens of the cathedral and the adjoining Bishop’s garden. The community of Hereford Cathedral is currently focussing on reducing its environmental impact and, in 2020, they were awarded the Silver Eco Church Award from A Rocha UK in recognition of their commitment to creation care.

Alan Cartwright, Head of Estates for Hereford Cathedral, said: “We are very grateful to ‘Welcome to our Future’ for supplying these new bird boxes which will benefit the environment of the cathedral gardens. We are fortunate to welcome a variety of wildlife into these riverside gardens, and hope the installation of these boxes will further support our eco aims as a community.”

Bill Richardson, Grants Manager, Welcome to Our Future said: "We are delighted that Hereford Cathedral agreed to take part in this project, funded by Severn Waste Services, to try and help increase bird numbers by providing safe nesting sites."
