Peter Dyke, born in Hertfordshire, was organ scholar of Robinson College, Cambridge, and gained his FRCO in 1987. In 1998 he took up his current post as assistant director of music at Hereford Cathedral, where, as well as accompanying the daily services, he has played for the choir on its frequent broadcasts, tours and recordings. He founded and directs Hereford Cathedral Voluntary Choir, which has given world premieres at home Three Choirs Festivals and toured continental Europe.

In 1993, Peter was awarded second prize in the interpretation competition at the St Albans International Organ Festival and has since pursued an active recital career, playing throughout the British Isles and further afield; he gave a recital at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris in May 2016. His biennial performances of Messiaen’s La nativité du Seigneur have become a much-anticipated fixture in Hereford Cathedral’s liturgical calendar and have brought a large number of people to a new appreciation of Messiaen’s music. Over the last eight years he has been the mentor for the cathedral’s organ scholars, who have since pursued active university and post-graduate careers. Peter has helped to found two highly successful organists’ training schemes; his work in this and other fields was recognised by the award of ARSCM in 2010.

His solo CD recordings have included music by J S Bach at St Albans Abbey and English Romantic repertoire at Hereford. A more recent Hereford disc, including his own transcription of Elgar’s Enigma Variations, has had several favourable reviews internationally. In 2005 he recorded a series of short programmes from Germany for BBC Radio 3 exploring Bach’s journey to Lübeck in 1705, broadcast as part of that network’s highly successful A Bach Christmas. He continues to study improvisation with Thomas Dahl in Hamburg.
