Organ Recital - Tuesday 3 August The organ concert which will be performed on Tuesday 3 August 2021 (1.15pm) by Peter Dyke is a special one to honour the memory of Angus Smart. Angus was a well-known and much-loved member of the cathedral congregation and community for very many years. He had been a huge enthusiast for music, especially organ music, and was a loyal supporter of the organ concerts each year. He died in April 2020, after suffering a fall. Sadly, because of the coronavirus pandemic, only a very few members of Angus’s family were permitted to attend his funeral, and it was impossible for the service to include the many pieces of organ music he had planned. Peter Dyke’s concert will feature much of the music Angus had chosen, and gives an opportunity for us to remember him at an occasion when more of his friends and family can now gather. Angus after the St Ethelbert Award ceremony, with Bishop Richard Frith Angus was a lynchpin in musical life in Herefordshire. He served as secretary to the Area RSCM committee, helping to produce the booklets for the annual diocesan choirs festivals; he was a founder of the Herefordshire Organists’ Society in 1992, producing and distributing its newsletter; he served as treasurer to the Diocese of Hereford Organists’ Training Scheme for over a decade. He was a crucial point of contact for churches seeking an organist at short notice and his wise advice and quiet enthusiasm were an enormously valuable support to the music here. In 2011 he was awarded the RSCM’s Certificate of Special Service, and in 2017 received the Order of St Ethelbert from the Bishop of Hereford.
