Rehearsals of The Hereford Passion are well underway, with less than eight weeks until the opening night on Friday 8 March.

Directed by the Revd Canon James Pacey, who was appointed as Chancellor last year, The Hereford Passion will see over thirty people from the local community share the story of Jesus’ final days. The Hereford Passion will use words, music and action to tell the events of the days leading to the crucifixion of Jesus, against the stunning architecture of Hereford Cathedral’s nave.

The Revd Canon James Pacey, Chancellor of Hereford Cathedral, said, “I’m delighted to report that rehearsals are going very well! We have a very talented cast from across Herefordshire and the whole production has a real sense of being staged by the community, for the community. We’re all really excited for audiences to see what we’re working on and we are keen to invite everyone: whether they are committed Christians who want to experience a fresh take on these events or people who might be wondering what all the fuss over Easter is about.”

Taking the role of Jesus is Hereford-based performer Sam Morrish who is no stranger to taking on the lead, having recently performed the quite different role of Shrek in X-entricity’s production of Shrek the Musical. This will be the first non-musical play that Sam has performed in since sixth form, and he is very excited to be getting stuck into such a compelling project.

In perhaps an ironic casting option, the roles of two of the individuals responsible for sending Jesus to his death have been filled by prominent members of cathedral clergy. Revd Prebendary Nicholas Lowton, who people may recognise from the BBC2 series, A Vicar’s Life, will take on the role of Pilate, whilst the Dean of Hereford will play Annas.

The Very Revd Sarah Brown, Dean of Hereford, said, “Playing the role of Annas has come as a surprise to one who is more accustomed to trying to promote Jesus rather than take him down. Apart from having to get used to that, I love the script which reveals surprising motivations and adds nuances to what is a tense and beautiful drama. If you are of faith, this is a wonderful telling of the story of Holy Week. If you are not of faith, then this is simply great theatre!”

The Hereford Passion will take place in the nave of Hereford Cathedral on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 March 2024 at 7.30pm. Tickets, which cost £8 for adults and £6 for children, are available to purchase from the Cathedral Shop (01432 374 210) or the cathedral website by clicking here

The Hereford Passion is sponsored by the Friends of Hereford Cathedral and The Passion Trust.
