We are now well underway with our Eastern Cloisters Project so we thought we’d give a little update on what has been happening behind the scenes over the last few weeks:

 

• The archaeologist work under the slabs of the cloister path has been completed and broken beer bottles and smoking pipes were discovered.

 

• A medieval roof truss which was hidden in a modern wall has been discovered in No. 12

 

• The sinking floors of No 12 have needed further attention than initially thought and the current plan is to reinforce the ground floor ceiling with Acrow Props before using a hydraulic ram to push the sagging beam back in to place before adding reinforcements

 

• The modern extension at the back of No 12 has been knocked down and removed. This is now ready for a shallow, archaeological investigation of the site before the foundations of the new extension are prepared

 

• Simon and Max from Hudson Stonework have been busy cutting all of the stone ready for the project and are now checking the exposed stone on site ready for the scaffolding to arrive. Some of the old stone will be cut down to use as infill for smaller sections to make sure that materials are repurposed wherever possible

 

• The replacement slabs for the walk way in the Cloisters have been delivered and work will begin to replace these soon
