Following the recent update in government guidance regarding Covid-19 restrictions, we will be making the following changes. If we receive further guidance in the coming days we will update this page accordingly.

From Friday 10 December, face coverings must be worn throughout Hereford Cathedral by visitors, people attending events and those participating in an act of worship. Masks may be removed when singing, if you wish, and are not required for those leading the service.

We will be encouraging all of those visiting the cathedral to observe social distancing where possible and, as a result of this, will be making some changes to the way that services and events organised by the cathedral are managed.

Christmas Tours

Our Christmas Tours will still run as normal but we kindly ask that all attendees wear a face covering. To support with social distancing and to prevent crowding we will be keeping tour numbers limited and where possible splitting the tour into smaller groups. We also encourage pre-booking to avoid disappointment on the day. If you would prefer to enjoy your hot drink and mince pie outside just let our café team know and they can provide you with a takeaway cup.

Christmas Fair

We ask that everyone attending this year’s fair wears a face covering throughout their visit and is mindful of social distancing. We have created more space within the cathedral by altering the stall layout around the nave which currently does not contain pews. We will be asking all guests to arrive via the North Door (main entrance to the cathedral) which will be staffed by a member of the cathedral team all day and leave via St John’s Door (to the rear of the building). We will be controlling numbers to minimise the risk of crowding and congestion and to ensure that we stay well below the maximum permitted number of 500 people at any one time. This may mean that visitors need to queue outside the cathedral to be let in and we thank you in advance for your patience!

Christmas Services

As many of you will be aware, our large services this year have all been ticketed to help manage numbers and ensure that a socially distanced seating plan can be observed. The Christingle Service, Christmas Eve Choral Evensong and Christmas Day Eucharist (10am) are all currently fully booked and should be able to take place as planned. If you no longer feel comfortable attending one of these services and already have tickets allocated, please let us know, so that we can reallocate your seat to someone on the waiting list.

We will be sharing a pre-recorded version of the Christingle service on our website on Christmas Eve and live streaming the Christmas Day 10 am Eucharist so individuals can also join in from home.

Please note that we have very limited tickets remaining for the Epiphany carol service at 3.30 pm on 9 January.

Other events, concerts and services

Each year we warmly welcome many different groups, schools and musicians to host their events within the cathedral. If you are attending one of these events which has been organised by an external group and require any more information about the steps they are taking to protect audience members please contact them directly. As with all activities taking place within the cathedral from Friday 10 December, face coverings are required.

We know how frustrating the events of the last few weeks are, especially at such a special time of the year when we are longing for normality and to come together to celebrate Christmas. We really appreciate all of the support we have been shown throughout the year as we have taken steps to help protect our community and thank you in advance for your patience as we navigate the next set of restrictions together.
