The Cantilupe Pilgrimage Artwork

Madmountainstitchers

August – November 2020

From August until early November this year we are pleased to be hosting a textile artwork which celebrates St Thomas Cantilupe and pilgrimage. This can be found in the North Transept, near to the Shrine of St Thomas.

On hearing about the planned celebration of pilgrimage this year in Hereford the Madmountainstitchers, Margitta Davis and Penny Turnbull, were keen to respond creatively with an artwork that combines print and stitch to share the story of St Thomas Cantilupe. Penny and Margitta are textile artists based in the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons area. They work from a studio at Court Cupboard Gallery, New Court Farm, Abergavenny.

The artwork represents the long journey of pilgrims through the winding paths and woodlands of Wales. Shaped into a willow-framed arch, it mimics the shapes of the Cantilupe shrine and the specially chosen textile colours reference the hues of the cathedral building itself.

The piece will be exhibited in the North Transept.
