Hereford Cathedral has been awarded ten silhouette soldiers funded by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust.

The silhouettes have been installed into the choir stalls and pews to act as a poignant reminder to all those who visit the cathedral during the Remembrance period. The soldiers represent those from the Hereford Cathedral community who lost their lives during World War One, including former choristers, sons and nephews of clergy and Lily Weaver, a munitions worker.

The award was made under the Armistice and Armed Forces Communities programme, which makes awards to bring communities together to remember; and to think about the Armed Forces today. It is hoped that the silhouettes will act as a source of reflection and contemplation alongside the services taking place over the coming weeks. The reading of the Names of the Fallen will take place daily at 4.30 pm from Monday 5 November with the final names being read at the cathedral during the Service of Reflection to mark the Centenary of the Armistice and the Restoration of Peace on Sunday 11 November at 3.30 pm.

The Dean of Hereford, The Very Revd Michael Tavinor added: “Hereford Cathedral has been at the centre of our city and county from time immemorial and has been a focus for occasions of joy, sorrow and thanksgiving. Having walked the journey from August 2014 as we've remembered each stage of this great conflict, I'm pleased that the four years reach their completion in our cathedral and feel sure that the images placed and the service of remembrance will be of comfort and strength to all.”
