Student Volunteering Week

13 - 19th February 2023

Student Volunteering Week is currently taking place. Each year, thousands of students across the country volunteer with a variety of charities and organisations to help learn new skills, gain valuable work experience and meet new people.

We are lucky to have student volunteers working with us here at the Cathedral; here Laura talks about how easy it was to join the team and how she feels volunteering will help her in the future:

“I’m Laura, a student volunteer in the Education Department here at Hereford Cathedral.

I’m currently studying at Hereford Sixth Form, where I’m studying Drama, Chemistry and Biology. I’m hoping to go on to study drama at university, and thinking about a career in education.

I heard about volunteering at the cathedral through the Impact Portal and Hereford Sixth Form college. I had visited the Cathedral previously with family and thought it would be a fascinating place to volunteer.

Joining the team was easy.  I knew I wanted to help with the Education department, so I had an informal interview with the head of Education and Family learning, and found some areas I would like to help with.   I work with the team at Lego Club and Messy Church. I especially enjoy Messy Church where I get to interact with children of all ages, and have responsibility for running craft activities.  It’s really interesting to see how all the different ages interact with the activities on offer.  Find out more about Messy Church here.

I think volunteering is a great way to spend free time, and I know that it will be useful as an addition to my UCAS application.  I’m gaining work experience, and getting to see if a career in education something I’d like to pursue.”

We are always on the lookout for new volunteers here at Hereford Cathedral and would love to hear from any students currently looking for volunteering experience. We offer a range of volunteering roles including Welcoming and Guiding.

We are excited that in the future we will be working with more students through Hereford Cathedral School’s Diploma, and organisations such as, Creative Pathways in the Shire.
