LENT AT HEREFORD CATHEDRAL WITH LIFE and LEARNING

Lent will be very different this year, but Life and Learning is offering two opportunities for reflecting together online.

LENT COURSE: Caring for Creation

‘Caring for Creation’ is a five-week York Course.  Although intended for a physically gathered group discussion, the course is also designed to work online – which will have to be our way of engaging with it this year.  Visit www.yorkcourses.co.uk/product/caring-for-creation to find out more about the course and see the materials that are available; this where you must order the course booklet for delivery to your home, or in digital format for delivery to your e-reader, tablet or computer.  We will run the course from the week beginning February 21st.  Those who have registered an interest will be contacted and offered some possible days and times for online discussion groups.  To register for inclusion, or to ask any questions about the course, contact Canon Chris Pullin: [email protected].

LENT ART: Contemplating Lent - a journey with artist Sophie Hacker

For the past few years we have had an artwork installed in the cathedral during Lent, and it has been the focal point for reflections before Compline on Tuesday evenings. This year, in partnership with Winchester Cathedral we are offering ‘Contemplating Lent - a journey with artist Sophie Hacker,’ an online art experience.

Each week a work of art by Sophie, loosely related to the Sunday Gospel, will be displayed on the cathedral website and on social media (where people are invited to leave their reflections on it).  There will be a short introductory film each week in which Sophie introduces the work.  During Holy Week (date and time TBC) we will join on Zoom with people from Winchester Cathedral to look back over the five weeks, invited to say what that pilgrimage has been for us.

There is no need to register for this, just look out for the weekly postings of Sophie’s work.  Details of how to join the Zoom discussion will be advertised nearer the time.

Sophie Hacker specialises in Church Art.  She is a trustee of Art and Christianity, the UK's leading organisation in the field of visual art and religion, and a Visiting Scholar at Sarum College in Salisbury Cathedral Close.  Since 2006 she has been involved in both the display and production of artworks in Winchester Cathedral. In November 2020 she became an Artist Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters on Glass.
