The Visitation of Hereford Diocese in 1397

Ian Forrest and Christopher Whittick | 7pm | Tuesday 13 June 2023 | College Hall | £10

In 1397 the bishop of Hereford toured his diocese asking questions about its churches and people. The answers he received were written into a slim paper book, which survives in the cathedral archives today. Ian Forrest and Christopher Whittick have recently published a complete translation of this important medieval document and will discuss its unparalleled insight into life, behaviour, religious belief and practice during a period of religious and political turmoil.

Ian Forrest is Professor of Social and Religious History at the University of Oxford. Christopher Whittick spent 44 years as an archivist in local government and is now a freelance cataloguer, researcher and editor.
