Dr Jem Bloomfield | 7.00pm| Monday 28 October 2024 | Online | £5

C.S. Lewis’ Narnia novels have captivated generations of readers with their fantastical images, vivid story-telling and gripping adventures.  In this talk, Jem Bloomfield will explore the way Narnia weaves together literary and theological meanings.

He’ll examine telling details which give clues to the novels’ vision of faith, asking why it matters that animals can talk in Narnia, what the “Deep Magic” can tell us about the Trinity, and why Mr Tumnus has a book called Is Man A Myth?  He’ll point to moments where Narnia is enriched by literary allusions to medieval poetry, renaissance epic and detective novels.  The talk will highlight the way the novels enchant the world around us, and draw us towards a mystery beyond the Narnian horizon.

Dr. Jem Bloomfield is Assistant Professor of Literature at the University of Nottingham, having previously taught at Exeter and Oxford Brookes.  His current research interests include Shakespeare and the Bible, detective novels and fantasy fiction.
