Hereford Cathedral’s Chained Library includes at least eleven manuscript books which came from the library of the Hereford Greyfriars. Books are almost the only artefacts to survive from a community founded in 1228, just four years after the first Franciscans crossed to England. The Greyfriars had close links with the cathedral and supported the canonisation of Thomas Cantilupe.

This talk will explore who they were, what they were doing in Hereford, and what their books tell us about them. This event is part of the Life & Learning programme and Rosemary Firman is the cathedral’s librarian.
