Following on from the Church of England’s guidance that was published this afternoon, we can confirm that no public worship will be offered in the cathedral until further notice.

This decision does not mean that we are closing the doors of the cathedral to those who need us during a rather uncertain time, but instead we are changing the way worship looks during this period.

The cathedral will be open each day from 9 am – 5 pm for anyone who wishes to find a quite space for prayer and reflection or to light a candle. We kindly ask that anyone joining us in the cathedral during this time pays particular attention to the signage around the cathedral explaining the hygiene precautions that must be adhered to:

  • Please keep a safe distance apart from other people
  • Please do not visit us if you feel unwell (pastoral support via the telephone can be offered instead)
  • Please wash your hands before and after your visit. Your nearest hand washing facilities are in the Chapter House Garden Toilets.

We will be removing the majority of the publicity materials from the cathedral in the next 24 hours to minimise areas of risk. We also ask that any literature that you pick up within the cathedral is either disposed of as you leave or taken home with you.

We are currently working on utilising our website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages to ensure that those who are unable or choose not to visit the cathedral during this time still have access to faith and worship resources on a regular basis.

The Church of England has a huge amount of resources available here: www.churchofengland.org/more/media-centre/coronavirus-covid-19-guidance-churches

Our website already has a large archive of webcasts available to listen to here: www.herefordcathedral.org/webcasts

We fully understand that not everybody has access to digital resources or is confident in using these so we are also establishing a telephone network to be able to support those within our congregation or community who made need our support the most. If you, or someone you know, needs pastoral support please contact the Cathedral Office (01432 374 200) or email [email protected]
