Via Crucis is a meditation for Good Friday in words and music, offered by Hereford Cathedral during a Holy Week when restrictions have prevented the normal presentation of one of Bach’s Passions.

Philip Moore, former organist of York Minster, has composed a new work in fifteen short movements illustrating aspects of the Way to the Cross. Peter Dyke plays the music on the cathedral’s Willis organ, while Andrew Piper and Kay Garlick present readings from the Passion story and meditative prayers.

The music was composed in the winter of 2020–21 and this recording will be the first time the work has been heard in Hereford. Peter said ‘It’s been very exciting to get to know this major new work, and I am delighted that we can enrich the cathedral’s Holy Week programme in this way despite the difficulties presented by the pandemic. The different movements offer opportunities to explore some of the rich and expressive sounds on the Willis organ and help cast new light on the familiar story.’
