As the countdown to Three Choirs Festival gets underway we thought we would take a look at some of the events which will form part of the festival this year. This week, Three Choirs Festival Youth Choir:

Three Choirs Festival Youth Choir - Saturday 4 August, 11.15 am

The Three Choirs Festival Youth Choir was formed in 2010, when over 40 singers took part in the first concert in Tewkesbury Abbey. The choir is made up of keen singers aged 14-25 from around the county and beyond.

Their aim is to provide members with an opportunity to participate in one of the most prestigious music festivals in the world and to work with some great conductors and musicians. It is a busy and rewarding experience and many participants are keen to return for another year. Members of the Youth Choir commit themselves to several preliminary rehearsal days and the concert during festival week.

In this year's performance, The Stabat Mater reimagines the meditations of the Virgin Mary as she stands before the Cross. This setting by Cecilia McDowall is at times contemplative and solemn, at others impassioned and emphatic. Alongside this is a choral arrangement of Elgar’s dramatic Sea Pictures, recently recorded by the ESO, who also celebrate their local connections with Elgar’s effervescent Serenade.

We’re still accepting applications from keen singers aged 14-25, apply at 3choirs.org/youth-choir.
