We are saddened to announce the death of The Very Reverend Peter Haynes 1925–2018, Dean of Hereford 1982–92.

Our thoughts and prayers are very much with Peter’s sons, Richard and Michael and with their families at this sad time.

Peter served a long and distinguished ministry in the dioceses of York and Bath and Wells and at Hereford was responsible for many developments in cathedral life. Steering the cathedral through the challenges of 1988/9 relating to displaying and caring for the Mappa Mundi, he paved the way for the major developments we now enjoy – the new Mappa building with its exhibition and setting for the cathedral’s unique chained library.

Peter and and his wife Ruth returned to Hereford in 2004, during which year Ruth died. Peter has been a popular and much loved part of cathedral life over these years and we shall miss his presence among us.

Peter's Funeral Eucharist will take place in the cathedral on Thursday 29 March (Maundy Thursday) at 2.30 pm. The Bishop of Hereford will preside and the Dean will preach.

As building works are being completed in College Cloisters, we regret that we are only able to offer parking to the disabled, for whom a space will be reserved on application to the Precentor.

Please note that members of the Foundation wishing to robe should contact the Precentor for further information.
