On 12 July, our first Sunday services since before the start of lock down will take place.

To help manage physical distancing, whilst services are taking place we are unable to welcome any visitors into the cathedral. We kindly ask that individuals who are not joining us for worship schedule their visit for between 12 noon and 3 pm.

Face Coverings Update (Friday 24 July)

On Thursday 23 July, the Church of England issued this new guidance: We strongly advise that face coverings should be worn by all those attending a place of worship, including ministers, worshippers, staff, volunteers, contractors and visitors, where there may be other people present; remembering that they are mainly intended to protect other people, not the wearer, from coronavirus (COVID-19) and that they are not a replacement for social distancing and regular hand washing.

As this guidance is advisory, rather than mandatory, the Chapter is content to leave the decision about wearing masks to each individual. In order not to impair audibility during public worship, clergy and other people who have speaking parts in the service will not wear masks, but the priests who are administering holy communion will wear a mask during the time of administration.

The Chapter recognises that many members of the cathedral congregation are vulnerable or of an age where staying at home is still firm governmental and public health advice. We recommend, therefore, that those aged 70 years and over should carefully consider and then decide on the balance of risk to your health before deciding to attend public worship; and our strong advice to those of you who are extremely clinically vulnerable is that you should not yet attend public worship.

For those people who are unable to join us for services in the cathedral, the Chapter is producing a weekly webcast of Sunday Morning Worship, which can be found on the cathedral website, where Tim Symons, our Liturgy and Music Administrator, regularly posts podcasts of the cathedral choir singing Choral Evensong. The pew sheet will continue to be available by email, or in printed form for those people who do not have access to the internet or a computer. In these ways, we hope to provide sufficient spiritual nourishment to sustain everyone through these challenging times.

If you have any concerns or questions about returning for public worship, please don’t hesitate to contact a member of the cathedral team or email [email protected]
