Face Coverings Update (Thursday 6 August)

From Saturday 8 August face coverings are required by law in England to worn by everyone attending places of worship: this rule applies to visitors and worshippers alike.

Therefore, we kindly ask visitors to wear a face covering in the Cathedral, Cathedral Shop, Mappa Mundi & Chained Library Exhibition and any other indoor space within the cathedral.

Face Coverings During Worship

During a service, there is an exemption for those people who are officiating, as well as for those people who have speaking roles (for example, reading the Scriptures, preaching the sermon, and leading the prayers): none of these people are required to wear face coverings while they are speaking, provided that physical distancing can be maintained.

This exemption does not apply to worshippers without speaking roles, who should wear face coverings throughout their time in the cathedral. As in previous weeks, priests administering Holy Communion will continue to wear a mask during the distribution of the Blessed Sacrament.

We understand not everyone is able to wear a face covering for a variety of reasons. However, if you are not exempt, we do kindly ask that you support our community with this request.
