The Cathedral Chapter wishes to appoint a

Chapter Clerk and Chief Operating Officer

Salary £50,000pa

Hereford Cathedral is a building of great antiquity and has been a place of Christian worship and pilgrimage for well over 1,300 years. Today it has a large and regular congregation, an internationally-renowned musical tradition and a commitment to Christian learning and heritage education. As the home of the Mappa Mundi, a 1217 copy of the Magna Carta and the largest surviving chained library in the world, the cathedral attracts over 200,000 visitors and pilgrims each year.

We seek a Chapter Clerk and Chief Operating Officer with a specific focus to link the strategic objectives of the Chapter with the operating capability of the organisation. Reporting to the Dean, the post will have overall responsibility for the lay administration, non-liturgical governance, corporate support and commercial operations of the cathedral.

The successful candidate will have:

  • a proven track record of strategic leadership
  • substantial senior management experience of a corporate support function
  • worked collaboratively at board level
  • experience of leading change and fostering a culture of continuous improvement within a complex environment
  • experience of planning and delivering complex projects within budget
