'The First Celebration of Nine Lessons with Carols' by Howard Tomlinson

On 24 December 1880, the first Nine Lessons with Carols service took place, not in the magnificent surroundings of King's College Chapel but in a temporary wooden "pro-cathedral" in Truro. The celebration had been devised by Edward White Benson, the new diocese's first bishop, with the help of his succentor, Somerset Walpole.

This lecture will explore the service's origins and setting; its content and structure; and how it was adapted by Dean Milner-White at King's. The talk is based on new material from the Cornish archives at Kresen Kernow.
