On Saturday 2 February 2019 at 7.15 pm Peter Dyke, assistant director of music at Hereford Cathedral, will give a performance of Olivier Messiaen’s organ masterpiece La nativité du Seigneur, which consists of nine movements or ‘meditations’ inspired by the birth and life of Christ.

I La vierge et l’enfant (The Virgin and Child)
II Les bergers (The Shepherds)
III Desseins éternels (Eternal designs)
IV Le verbe (The Word)
V Les enfants de Dieu (The Children of God)
VI Les anges (The Angels)
VII Jésus accepte la souffrance (Jesus accepts suffering)
VIII Les mages (The Magi)
IX Dieu parmi nous (God among us)

The work was written in 1935, when the composer was only 27 years old. It is one of the first works to make extensive use of the modes of limited transposition which Messiaen himself devised.

Tickets, priced at £5, are available from the cathedral shop (01432 374210) or on the door.

Please note that tickets bought online will be subject to a £1.50 booking fee per ticket.
