“Mozart died writing this” is arguably the least helpful reference to this hugely popular work, intriguingly left unfinished at his death on 5 December 1791. Its enduring appeal makes Mozart’s Requiem one of the outstanding works in the choral repertoire.

It is paired with Haydn’s Paukenmesse, composed in 1796. Known for its dramatic use of timpani, it is one of the most popular of Haydn’s fourteen masses.
