Tower & Crossing

The tower dates from the early fourteenth century. It is covered with 'ballflowers' - flowers in stone which are found on many local churches, and of which the Cathedral provides an early example. It was extensively restored in the late twentieth century with the help of Hereford Cathedral Perpetual Trust.

The tower stands at just over 165 feet to the top of the pinacles and 140 feet and 6 inches to the top of the lead roof. There are 218 steps to the top of the tower - although this figure is not widely held to be entirely accurate. We challenge our visitors to the tower to decide for themselves.
