About the Virtual Tour
The Virtual Tour has been constructed from a combination of traditional still photography as well as 'immersive imaging'. The majority of still photography has come from the Cathedral Photographic Archive located within the modern working library.
The immersive images have been created using a very high detail digital camera, panoramic tripod and a fish eye lense capable of capturing 183 degrees. This system enables the capture of every possible surrounding angle from one point with just two photographs. However, for the cathedral tour we actually used three images which we then merged together to allow for strong lighting contrasts.
When the images have been taken we use specialist software to convert the merged photographs, from a flat fish eye distorted panoramic, to a spherical one which can be viewed as if you were standing in the place the pictures were taken from.
