Current projects include:

  • The restoration of the south nave clerestory, including limited work to lead and windows. The seven-year project was started in April 2007 and will cost up to £800,000. The project is supported through the English Heritage/Wolfson Foundation, Heritage Lottery Fund and the numerous supporters, both private individuals and trusts, who support Hereford Cathedral Perpetual Trust. Each year up to £100,000 has to be raised through the Perpetual Trust to enable each phase of the work to be undertaken.
  • The ongoing funding of the cathedral choir to provide scholarships for our 18 choristers while they sing in the choir, as well as support from the time that they leave the choir until the end of year 11 and their GCSE examinations. Additional bursarial support is available to ensure that any boy is able to join the choir if it appropriate for him regardless of his family's financial position. The choir is at the heart of cathedral life and it is our responsibility to ensure that this unique musical tradition can be allowed to grow and develop.
  • The Dean and Chapter currently hold a Wish List of projects that they would like to undertake, both large and small, and which encompass all aspects of cathedral life of worship and ministry, education and music, restoration and maintenance. If you would like to fund a specific project please do contact the Perpetual Trust office and they will be delighted to discuss the projects available.

Since the foundation of the Perpetual Trust in 1995 much has been achieved, including:

  • The complete re-facing of the east end of the Lady Chapel, a project described by English Heritage as containing some of the finest work currently underway anywhere in the country.
  • The restoration of the medieval Shrine of St Thomas Cantilupe of Hereford in the north transept.
  • Repair of the outer roof of the Stanbury Chapel protecting the early sixteenth-century fan vaulting.
  • Conservation of the Tudor wall paintings on the screen of the Audley Chapel and the development of an associated educational programme for local schools.
  • The establishment of endowment funds, largely through legacy gifts, in support of the choral foundation and cathedral fabric.
  • Restoration of the pinnacles of the central tower and the re-leading of the roof.
