Sacred Space
The launch of a new book, published by Continuum, available at the heavily discount price of £10.99 (RRP. £14.99) exclusively from Hereford Cathedral Shop.

This series of essays is published to mark the 75th anniversary of the revival of the Anglican shrine of Our Lady at Walsingham, one of the great centres of pilgrimage in medieval times.

There has always been a close connection between sacredness and specific places - whether mountains and springs or sacred groves and temples. If the divine power is at home in a particular place, it must follow that the worshipper should travel there, at whatever cost in money or suffering.

The essays explore the ideas that underlie the historic connections between place, holiness and travel:

What is Christian about the Christian idea of sacred space?
Where is sacred space to be found in modern art and literature?
Has the element of the feminine been excluded from the sacred?
How do conceptions of sacred space relate to the problems of city life today?

The Dean of Hereford, the Very Revd Michael Tavinor has written one of the chapters, entitled ‘Sacred Space and the built environment’ in which he explores such themes as:

Sacred space and geometry
Sacred space and light
Sacred space and a sense of mystery
Sacred space and memory

Commenting on this book, the Dean said ‘Our religious buildings, great and small, have a unique vocation to open to us so many aspects of God. This book will, I hope, be of use to those who visit our churches and of special interest to those who worship in cathedrals week by week. It raises questions for us all which challenge and inform.’
