OUTREACH

In 2003 the cathedral started a major new outreach initiative, to share its musical resources with local schools, in partnership with Hereford Cathedral School.

In June and November 2003 the cathedral held two singing workshops which were directed by the project's co-ordinator, Martyn Lane. On each occasion, over 100 children from four different primary schools spent the day rehearsing and performing Horovitz' popular cantata Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo. They also heard a short recital by the cathedral choristers and a demonstration of the cathedral organ.

As part of the preparation for these workshops Martyn Lane visited each school on several occasions to work with the pupils on Captain Noah, accompanied for one visit by a group of the cathedral choristers with their director, Geraint Bowen.

In September 2003, the second strand of the initiative was launched with the formation of the Hereford Junior Singing Club. This choir meets on Saturday mornings during term time from 10.00–11.30 am at the cathedral and works with Martyn Lane and other colleagues from Hereford Cathedral School. Its first public performance in December 2003 was a great success and the choir already numbers over 40 singers.

New members are always welcome: for more details please telephone Martyn Lane on 01432 269403 or e-mail him. The last singing workshop took place at the cathedral on 18 March 2004.
