South nave clerestory
£850,000 2007-12
While the first three phases of the latest scheme has attracted generous funding from the joint English Heritage and Wolfson Foundation scheme, the end of the ring-fenced cathedral funding within English Heritage has cast doubt on whether our current project can or ever will be finished. The current work is restoring the stonework, windows and lead on the south side of the nave, and among others working on the project, enables apprentice stone carves to learn their craft. If this work has to slow down or stop what is their future?
Social history and comment continues to be woven into the fabric of the place. Six new corbels have been carved to mark the retirement of six individuals, who in some cases, have almost had a life time of involvement with this place.
Sir Thomas Dunne KG KCVO: celebrating 30 years of service as Lord-Lieutenant of
Herefordshire and his creation as a Knight of the Garter.
Sir John Cotterell Bart, DL: the first Chairman of the Mappa Mundi Trust will be forever able
to keep ‘an eye’ on the new library building.
Mike Bayliss: Dean’s Verger for over 14 years and who has had the responsibility of
ensuring that the daily cycle of services and other events occur and are quietly managed.
Lt Col Andrew Eames (RM): 12 years as Chapter Clerk and Administrator.
Ron Shoesmith: Cathedral Archaeologist and responsible for the oversight of our care.
The Very Revd Michael Hooper: to mark his retirement as Bishop of Ludlow and 40 years of
service as a priest in the diocese.
If you look closely you may also find a few other surprises including one happy pipe smoker who has not noticed that the Grim Reaper is gazing across from the neighbouring corbel …
