Cathedral Choir
Ongoing £250,000 plus per annum

The music of the cathedral is at the very heart of its daily life. Choral Evensong sung daily, the Cathedral Eucharist celebrated every Sunday morning, Matins for those who wish to have solitude, special services remembering those who have gone before or marking great national celebrations are all part of the choir’s life. From sonnets by William Byrd to works by James McMillan; quiet, sublime Evensongs in the middle of February to the explosion of a Haydn Mass celebrating the opening of a Three Choirs Festival.
The music of this place however does not come without a cost; time, commitment and, above all, money. The music and liturgy, which includes the support of the Voluntary Choir, music outreach programmes and the developing programme of organ and choral scholars costs over £250,000 per annum. But without that cost what would be the beating heart of our worship?

Support for all aspects of our musical life is needed – support of choristerships as to ensure any boy can take up the opportunities available – funding of the organ scholar and the Choral Scholars we will welcome in September 2011 – lay clerks, Organists and Directors of Music, Assistant Organist, administrative support, new music, new robes … The list goes on but it all needs to be supported and within the support of those who love this place it can be achieved.
