Key Stage 3 History visits to the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library Exhibition

The Hereford Mappa Mundi
The Hereford Mappa Mundi is a unique primary resource for the study of Medieval History. For pupils studying the influence of the medieval church on people’s lives, an exploration of the images contained in the Mappa Mundi in relation to its moral framework will provide primary evidence of the medieval church’s teachings on life, death and divine judgement.

Hereford Cathedral Chained Library

Our Chained Library contains manuscripts and early printed books that provide fascinating source materials for historical study. The introduction of printing in the late 15thcentury had a vast influence on the growth of literacy, the use of the vernacular and the spread of education over the following centuries, as well as enabling the use of printed propaganda materials for religious or political ends. With notice, our librarian is happy to talk to pupils and show them examples of chained books that are relevant to their studies.
