Key Stage 2
A Pilgrimage Experience
Focus Question: What is worship and how is it expressed?
This visit offers children the opportunity through role play to learn about pilgrimage, and also to reflect on spiritually significant places or times in their own lives.
The visit is divided into two separate but related parts.

The medieval pilgrimage
The first part of the visit is a medieval role play. In this, each child takes on the character and costume of a medieval pilgrim bearing a gift and bringing prayers to the shrine of St Thomas Cantilupe at Hereford. We will provide children with costumes and gifts.
The children’s own pilgrimage
In the second part of the pilgrimage the children are given time to think about places and people that are important or special in their own lives. They light candles and have the choice either to share their personal thoughts with the rest of the group, or to keep them private.
A member of our education team will visit the children about two weeks before their visit to talk to them about the pilgrimage. They will leave a cameo portrait of each medieval pilgrim with the teacher, so that the children can prepare their characters, and they will also ask the children to prepare their own ‘special thoughts’.
There are two essential Teacher’s Packs which accompany the visit.
