Shape and Space Maths and Science Trail

The architecture of the cathedral lends itself perfectly to a shape and space trail. Children are led on an exploration of the architecture and carvings looking for familiar and not so familiar 3D and 2D shapes and spaces.

During the trail they are encouraged to look up, sideways and all around, and to notice the shapes of the windows and the vaulted ceilings as well as looking for shapes in the carvings. They look at the tower from the outside, and then look at the shapes of the columns and arches that are underneath the tower inside. They learn that the cathedral once had 2 towers, but one fell down, and that the supporting arches of the remaining tower had to be rebuilt to stop that one falling down too.

The children work in pairs and are given a clipboard and a tick sheet of shapes to look for.
Once the trail is complete, the children build a model of the cathedral for themselves out of chunky, 3D wooden puzzles that have been purpose made for us by attendees at the St. Owen Centre in Hereford.

This trail will take about  1 hour.
