Key Stage 1

Hereford Cathedral: A Special Place

Focus Question: Why and how do special places and symbols help people show what they believe?

In this trail, the many animals carved, embroidered and depicted in the architecture and fabric of the cathedral help to introduce children to the signs and symbols of Christianity.
Amongst other creatures they will discover lions guarding the font, an eagle holding the Bible, small creatures embroidering the choir stalls and also, through a small door guarded by a dragon, they will see a bird in a cross.

As the animals lead them around the cathedral, the children will find water in the font, have a chance to stand at the lectern, and also to sit in the choir and sing, and finally, they will be able light a candle for someone or something special to them. They will also be given another candle to take home to remind them of their special ‘thing’.

To help prepare children for their visit to the cathedral, there is a downloadable Teacher’s Pack.

This trail will take about 45 minutes.
