Tenth anniversary of Cathedral Organist

Details of our Special Evensong, Saturday 17 September 5.30 pm

 

On Saturday 17 September 2011 former Hereford Cathedral choristers will return to the choirstalls to sing Choral Evensong with the cathedral choir to mark the tenth anniversary of Geraint Bowen taking up the post of Organist and Director of Music in September 2001.

Geraint succeeded Dr Roy Massey in 2001, who had served himself as organist for 27 years.

 

 Geraint BowenPrevious to his appointment Geraint had held the positions of Organist & Master of the Choristers at St Davids Cathedral, Pembrokeshire and Assistant Organist at Hereford Cathedral and St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. In addition to being the cathedral's director of music he is also the conductor of Hereford Choral Society and is the Artistic Director of the Hereford Three Choirs Festival.

 

During his time at the cathedral he has led the cathedral choir on five overseas tours to the USA and South Africa and has conducted the choir at special services and concerts at the Barbican (2002), HM Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace (2005) and the Guards’ Chapel, London (2010). The choir has also broadcast many times on radio and television under his direction and has recorded two discs, both of which have been received to critical acclaim. Geraint has also introduced to the choir's programme an annual Holy Week performance of one of Bach’s Passions (St John Passion Tuesday 3 April 2012), a biennial performance of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (next performance Saturday 28 January 2012) and an annual orchestral Eucharist, for which the choir completes a cycle of Haydn's last six masses in 2012 (Nelson Mass, Sunday 6 May 2012).
