Concert to Celebrate Local Saints

Hereford Cathedral 22 July, 7.45pm

Local vocal ensemble 'Ensemble Sine Nomine', founded by two former Hereford choristers, will perform for the first time at Hereford Cathedral on 22 July.

They will salute, in music, three local figures who have recently celebrated in art at the Cathedral.  Thanks to the generosity of many donors, and as part of a project celebrating all our patron Saints, the Dean and Chapter have in recent years enriched the Cathedral with magnificent commemorations of:

• St Ethelbert, whose story is pictured on the central pillar of the retro-choir

• St Thomas Cantilupe, whose original shrine, in the north transept, has received a splendid canopy, and twelve nearby material panels telling his story in appliqué work

• Thomas Traherne, parish priest of Credenhill during the seventeenth century, commemorated by four brilliant stained glass windows, inspired by visionary images in his writings, and installed in the Audley Chapel.

These works of art now serve as a focus for teaching, prayer, and pilgrimage and have now led five local composers, under the supervision of the Canon Precentor, to put together twenty eight unaccompanied choral pieces celebrating Ethelbert, Cantilupe and Traherne.

The concert in the Lady Chapel on 22 July will present a selection of these Saints of Hereford Motets, framed by extracts from Cavalli's eight part Requiem Mass (1675). It will be a celebration of local saints, local singers, and local composers.

Admission is £10, and, thanks to a wide range of sponsorship and support, all takings will go to support the Cathedral's music and upkeep.

Interested music lovers are invited to support the concert, which could also be an opportunity to see the three art-works, not to mention the substantial progress which has now been made with the refurbishment of the Cathedral Close.

Tickets are available from Hereford Cathedral Shop on 01432 374210 / 374208 or from the Hereford Catehdral Perpetual Trust on 01432 374260
